Habitica
A to-do list that is literally a role-playing game.
Habitica was one of the first mainstream apps to fully fuse gamification with habit building. Rather than sprinkling game elements onto a task list, the software takes the form of an actual online role-playing game: completing real-life tasks, achieving goals, and maintaining habits is what advances your character.
Because the product IS the game, the usual mechanics arrive as a package: your avatar levels up through completed tasks, quests give structure to longer goals, and in-game rewards are earned with real-world follow-through.
The design lesson: full-game framing is high-commitment. It works for Habitica’s audience precisely because they opted into playing; the same treatment inside a B2B tool would fight the job the user came to do.
