Kahoot! turns a set of questions into a timed multiplayer game: everyone answers on their own device, points reward speed and accuracy, and a live leaderboard reshuffles after every question until a podium crowns the winners.
The mechanic that actually carries the product is synchrony. The same quiz taken alone is homework; taken together, with music, countdowns, and visible rank changes, it becomes a game show. That social energy is why it spread from classrooms into corporate training and all-hands meetings, though the emphasis on speed suits some learners better than others.
The design lesson: shared timing can be a mechanic in its own right. Before adding points to an activity, consider whether making it simultaneous and visible would do more.
