Duolingo
The benchmark for gamified learning: streaks, XP, badges, and leaderboards in one loop.
With over 500 million registered users, Duolingo is the most popular language learning app in the world, and it is one of the cleanest implementations of gamification done right. The company attributes much of its success at building consistent daily learning habits to its strategic use of game mechanics.
Nearly every core mechanic appears somewhere in the app: streaks reward daily consistency, XP turns lessons into visible progress, badges and achievements mark milestones, and leaderboards add a competitive layer between learners. The entire product is effectively a game whose win condition is learning a language.
The design lesson: Duolingo’s mechanics all point at one behavior, coming back tomorrow. For a SaaS product, that is the same retention problem, which is why this example shows up so often in onboarding and retention work.
