Three rings to close daily, and competitions that test fairness.

Apple’s Activity system turns daily movement into three rings on the watch face: Move, Exercise, and Stand. Closing them is the day’s win condition, and streak awards, monthly challenges, and shareable badges build longer arcs on top of that single glanceable visual.

Friend competitions convert activity into comparative points over a week, normalized against each person’s own goals. The community discussion around those contests exposes a real design problem: even normalized scoring can feel uneven when participants have very different goals and routines, so mathematical fairness and perceived fairness are not the same thing.

The design lesson: a progress visual simple enough to read at a glance can carry an entire engagement system, but competitive scoring needs to feel fair, not merely be fair on paper.
