Memrise

Language learning that deliberately dialed its gamification down.

Memrise approaches language learning with less overt gamification than most of its competitors. Streaks, learning goals, and visible progress remain, but the product has shifted its emphasis toward authentic content from native speakers rather than points and league tables.

That restraint is a real design position: recurrence is maintained through consistency mechanics alone, betting that genuinely useful practice material motivates better than a deeper reward economy would.

The design lesson: removing mechanics is a product decision users notice. Long-time learners attach loyalty to systems as much as content, so paring gamification back has to be handled as a migration, not a cleanup.
